Hudson River House
The property at Hudson River House is an ecologically and historically significant 129-acre
site adjacent to the Hudson River. Our first responsibility was the development of
the private residential space, providing a platform for the client’s personal enjoyment
as well as the capacity to host various events. The larger site also incorporates a
conservation easement, permanently ensuring that the property’s scenic and natural
characters are protected for future generations. The arrangement between the owners
of the property, Scenic Hudson, and the Open Space Institute highlights the success of
public and private partnerships working towards conservation.
Dirtworks was responsible for creating a resilient landscape here, working closely with
environmental, biological and community interests to explore a holistic approach to
ecological restoration and long-term resiliency. To do so, the design team explored
strategies for revitalizing trails while restoring local ecosystems and highlighting the
site’s diverse plant communities.
Hudson River House is a space for enjoying nature, but also a manifestation of the identity
of the local place, with a social and ecological history and a confluence of landscape
systems.
