Camphill Ghent Phase 2
Referencing the Hudson’ Valley’s landscape, the new landscape design for Camphill Ghent’s expansion includes pathways woven into the hillside through a series of raised decks. These wooden pathways are gentler on elderly joints, with a continuous safety railing. With sensitivity for the existing ecosystem, the walkways allow for stormwater to permeate through in natural drainage patterns, additionally, the design limits heavy grading and retaining walls throughout the site.
By extending existing circulation paths, we hope to expand access to the existing wetlands and tree lines, creating ecologically rich and stimulating experiences within nature. Loops and distance markers will help with wayfinding and areas for rest will encourage those who are less active to venture into the landscape.
Mixed native plantings bring the architecture into scale and create a sense of place. Borrowing from the Campus’ existing plant palette, our planting strategy will reference native pieces with a focus on lower maintenance. Features such as bird houses, insect hotels and bat houses encourage pollinators and native species to cohabitate with residents. Shade structures and large patios can help residents transition from interior to exterior, while creating comfortable places to rest in warm days.
