Cleveland Botanical Garden
Located within the botanically diverse environment of the Cleveland Botanical Garden,
the Elizabeth and Nona Evans Restorative Garden creates a series of spaces for
education, relaxation, and socializing. The Restorative Garden is composed of three
unique settings, each with a distinct character, sensory experience, and level of activity:
one for contemplation, one for education and therapy, and one for individual exploration.
With careful programming, detailing, and material selections, the Restorative Garden
accommodates the full range of the human condition by sensitively integrating the needs
of disabled and aging populations within the dynamic of a public space. The design
process required careful placement and coordination of new plant materials within the
existing botanical garden, and included the establishment of sustainable management
practices. Internationally recognized for its creativity and subtlety, the design emphasizes
the importance of public access to a relaxing and inspiring outdoor space while discreetly
creating an accommodating and engaging environment for individuals with physical and
intellectual disabilities.
