Heritage Museum and Gardens
Heritage Museum and Gardens is the largest public garden in Southern New England.
Founded in 1969 on the banks of the Shawme Pond in Historic Sandwich, 100 acres
of gardens and nature trails feature encyclopedic plant collections and a nationally
significant collection of Dexter rhododendrons, researched and hybridized there by
Charles Dexter.
Expanding upon Heritage’s mission to the public, the new Garden for the Five Senses
provides the opportunity for each individual to engage with nature on their own terms
in their own way and at their own pace. Sensitive to the discrete needs of each visitor,
the fully accessible design offers varying levels of sensory experience: tactile, auditory,
visual, olfactory and gustatory. Through careful detailing and programming, the garden
also offers a range of therapeutic attributes, enhancing range of motion, vestibular,
motor planning, proprioception and cognitive skills.
Set within a beautiful setting, linked to the surrounding gardens, and honoring Heritage’s
core mission, the garden welcomes everyone regardless of age, ability or perspective.
