Sutton Private Courtyard
This private courtyard garden is located in the historic district of Sutton Place. The
landscape reflects the history and legacy of the site: Rosario Candela, the prolific early
twentieth century Architect, designed the original building. The garden balances formal
geometry with more subtle meandering paths, a refined plant palette, and extensive
stonework.
We utilized reclaimed 200 year old bluestone to form a series of terraces, set against
a framework of stacked bluestone walls which were designed to mitigate the steeply
sloped site. A sweeping double stair is anchored by a 19th century Italian limestone
fountain.
The woodland walk, anchored by a stunning magnolia at a key focal point, creates an
accessible trail through woodland plantings, shrubs, and native flowering trees. The
meandering walk guides visitors to the upper lawn area for lawn games and relaxation.
Massings of small flowering trees create unique views, making the space feel larger and
more dynamic.
