Els Sensory Arts Garden
The Sensory Arts Garden at The Els Center for Excellence is designed for individuals with
autism. Grounded in interdisciplinary research and collaboration, the garden establishes
a nurturing sensory environment, celebrates individual strengths and preferences, and
positions nature as an essential partner in health and wellness.
Reflecting a carefully researched response to the breadth and complexity of autism, the
garden’s design involved a close collaboration with the Center’s Director of Programming
and an occupational therapist. Through calibrated sensory experiences, sensitive
detailing, and careful programming, the garden enriches motor, sensory, cognitive and
social skills. Considerations for routine, pattern, repetition, and wayfinding informed the
overall design while degrees of openness support discovery, autonomy and flexible use.
All materials and furnishings were considered for therapeutic potential. “Sensory rooms,”
centrally aligned within the garden, discretely target the five senses and feature easily
accessed custom planters filled with engaging, safe, sensory appropriate plants. A series
of reduced sensory spaces along the garden perimeter provide a calming counterpoint
for those experiencing hypersensitivity or seeking a moment of respite and refuge.
Highlighting the positive impact of the garden, individuals have found reprieve in the
“places away” and enrichment through exploration of the plants in the sensory rooms.
The garden has also become a place for outdoor instruction, providing opportunities to
connect with students who can be challenging to reach. Within a lush and safe setting,
the garden provides opportunity and choice for each visitor to engage with nature on
their own terms, in their own way and at their own pace.
