The Bilion Oyster Project will restore oyster reef habitat in the Bush Terminal Lagoons through a phased installation of seeded and unseeded bayballs and shell mounds. These bayballs, seeded with 23.5 million oysters, create the foundation of a new reef system. Marine contractors place the bayballs on the floor of the bay in strategic formations that allow for oyster reproduction and that provide access for monitoring. A 90 cubic yard shell mound, placed north of the bayballs, supports habitat creation.

Around the perimeter of the basin, restoration efforts support the wild eelgrass beds, enhancing the existing shoreline habitat.

Dirtworks worked alongside Billion Oyster Project to layout the bayballs and shell mounds, drafted construction drawings used for proof of concept through to permitting, and provided coordinates to guide their placement by marine contractors. Dirtworks will continue to support through various phases of the project.
