Cornell University Stocking Hall
The Department of Food Sciences is a unique, innovative and world-class entity within
the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Its mission is to educate undergraduate
and graduate students and conduct research that will expand our understanding of the
fundamental and applied aspects of foods. This renovation and expansion project,
including a new 165,000 GSF classroom building, will meet the department’s needs for
at least twenty years.
The landscape design ties into master planning efforts to enhance Tower Road, one of
the most important open spaces on campus. Reinforcing the school’s signature tree-lined
drive, the design allows for the phased implementation of streetscape improvements.
Within this rhythm are a series of landscape “episodes” which define important spaces
and help reduce the scale of the building complex.
The building façade recedes from the street at the main entry to create a forecourt,
arrival terrace and lawn. Grade change and multi-stem trees create a separation from
street activity while allowing for views of passers by. To the south, a courtyard offers a
series of distinct settings, including terraces, lawns, intimate seating areas and a trellis
structure for organized activities.
