Beach House
The renovation of an existing beach house and garden celebrates the dunes of Long Island. Native plant material was introduced to re-establish the dune ecosystem and establish a resilient, ecologically vibrant landscape. The native material was used strategically on this tiny property to create a lush, verdant setting while screening the road and nearby houses.
A modular wood deck expands outward from the house creating a variety of terraces that emphasize the sensitive siting on the dune. The main terrace is defined by voids in the decking that are filled by beach grass and bayberry clusters -- giving the impression that the decking is created around the existing native landscape. Ocean views are framed by native cedar and bayberry. A private terrace near the entry and guest bedroom and sheltered from the ocean breezes is framed by a small, intimate perennial garden.
