Entry Court & Garden
Charlottesville, Virginia
The entry court and garden provide a welcoming arrival area and a place of respite in a busy Medical Center. As part of a major utility upgrade project, the garden, entry court and parking lot required significant engineering coordination.
The terraced garden presents an elegant response to the formal facade of the building and sloping terrain. Within the garden, a spacious walk surrounds a central lawn that serves as a calm centerpiece and gathering space for special events. Fragrant magnolias frame adjacent seating areas and provide shade and privacy from the surrounding buildings. By using perimeter garden walls, large deciduous trees and the sloped terrain, views into the surrounding parking lot and roadway are mitigated. For ease of pedestrian circulation, the entire area is level. Bollards and special paving form a seamless pedestrian zone between the garden and main entry. Traffic is simplified as a one- way loop with a welcome center providing direction and assistance for visitors.
