This 3,000 square-foot rooftop terrace provides a therapeutic garden setting for an adjacent AIDS Care Unit while welcoming all residents, visitors and staff of this 700-bed long-term care facility.

The rooftop is designed around a series of garden rooms that vary in size and character in order to provide opportunities for structured activities, casual socializing, contemplation, and quiet solitude. A choice of protective settings is offered for individual comfort, ranging from complete shade to dappled sun/shade, to full sun. Ease of maneuverability is emphasized to conserve stamina and encourage residents to experience the garden without assistance. Planters vary in size and height for individual ease of use. Special areas are featured with floor painting to provide interest and orientation within the garden and when viewed from rooms above. A program of horticultural therapy links the garden to the Center's physical and occupational therapy programs.

The garden was built entirely through small donations and volunteer labor, and was the recipient of national and regional design awards featured in several television documentaries.
