Nature Conservation Reserve
Brockholes, United Kingdom
Dirtworks is collaborating with the Sensory Trust on concept plans for the reclamation of a former gravel mine into a nature conservation reserve of regional and national importance within the northwestern region of England.
Bordering the scenic Ribble river and stand of ancient forest, the site has been actively quarried until recently. As a result, the land is devoid of topsoil, posing a particular challenge for creating a sustainable setting for wildlife. The cost of providing sufficient topsoil for the 106-hectare site was beyond available funds. The Master Plan responds with a site-wide phased program of soil creation. The program harnesses the natural processes by which soil accumulates over time, and accelerates it. The intent is to "grow soil" by introducing plants that fix essential nutrients in their bodies, and then allowing them to decompose in place to become the soil that the site lacks.
The Master Plan's final building phase develops a "fluid" design that reflects the movement of the Ribble river and circulation within the site, and the site's dynamic development towards health and regeneration.
