Flight 93 National Memorial
Design Competition

In 2004, the Partners of the Flight 93 National Memorial established an international design competition that would create a fitting memorial to the 40 individuals, "The Heroes of Flight 93," who changed the history of the nation on September 11. Dirtworks, along with Michael Rubin Architects and ACME Communications have created a collective tribute to those 40 extraordinary individuals and their unifying act of courage.

The entire site is designed with a park-like setting in mind to celebrate their lives, reflect on their humanity and understand the significance of their action. This design creates distinct spatial experiences that engage the visitor first while driving and then while walking. The vehicular entry encompasses views into woodlands and across meadows to a distant landmark. This landmark is a hilltop circle of flag stanchions, housing the visitor's center below. From this point, visitors embark on foot where the scale becomes intimate and the pace becomes personal. Within a hemlock grove, a glass ring articulates a clearing. The visitors face the heroes of Flight 93, their names are etched on a ring of light and in the visitors' memories forever.
