The project involved the renovation and expansion of a 1927 Bauhaus home. The neighborhood is characterized by large homes situated close to the street, creating small, front yard public spaces and large backyard private spaces. The project is unusual for the neighborhood because the house is sited far back from the street. The fundamental organizing idea was to situate the house within a walled garden and create a series of private garden rooms into which the rooms of the house open.
The main entry walk along the edge of the property is defined by a vine covered trellis and lattice panels which screen the street and neighboring houses and unite the entry gate, auto court, main house and studio and all exterior spaces. Planned for a growing family and expanding art collection, lattice panels used throughout the property insure privacy, defines garden rooms, screens and frames views from the interior rooms and provide a backdrop for varied plantings.
