Dirtworks was asked to restore and enhance the central 22,000 SF courtyard of The Belnord, a turn of the century New York City landmark apartment building. The project is part of a major restoration and commercial conversion of the basement located under the courtyard.
The design respects the original courtyard's American Renaissance style while addressing the concerns and desires of the residents. By stressing unity between the architecture and landscape the plan re-creates the original garden as a rich pattern of integrated, classical shapes flanking the dramatic center fountain. The residents' concerns, including accessibility and the need for nature in the city, provide essential guidelines for the garden's design and management.
Located on the basement's roof slab, the garden requires careful technical engineering and architectural coordination. The Landmarks Commission requires approval and Dirtworks is coordinating the restoration of the original fountain and lampposts.
